How to Prepare for Your Lip Blush Appointment

Lip Tattoo Pre-Care Guide — Melbourne Designer Brows

A few simple steps before your lip blush or lip tattoo appointment can make a real difference to your results. Follow Anne’s guide below — especially the cold sore and hydration advice. We operate by appointment at our Richmond and Springvale studios; call 0418 188 277 if you have any questions.

In the Week Before

Keep your lips well hydrated with a plain lip balm in the days leading up to your appointment. Dry or flaky lips can affect the results, and in some cases we may need to reschedule if lips are too dry to tattoo safely. Gently exfoliate your lips with a soft toothbrush the night before to remove any dry skin.

48 Hours Before

Avoid alcohol, aspirin, fish oil, and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, as these can thin the blood and increase bleeding during the procedure. Limit caffeine on the day of your appointment.

Cold Sore History

If you’ve ever experienced a cold sore — even if it was years ago — we recommend having a quick chat with your GP or pharmacist before your appointment. Lip procedures can sometimes trigger a flare-up in those who carry the virus, and a simple short course from your doctor beforehand can help avoid this and ensure the best possible result.

Feel free to ask your technician about this when you book.

On the Day

Arrive with clean, product-free lips— no lipstick, lip liner, or lip balm.

You’re welcome to bring a lip balm for after your appointment (we recommend Healthy Care Paw Paw Balm or a plain, unflavoured, unmedicated balm).

Eat a good mealbefore you come in, as you’ll need to be careful with eating for the first few days after.

Please Let Us Know in Advance if You…

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have had lip fillers in the last 6 weeks
  • Are currently taking any medications, particularly blood thinners or Roaccutane
  • Have any allergies to topical anaesthetics (numbing cream)

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about preparing for your lip blush or lip tattoo appointment.

What should I do if I have a history of cold sores before a lip tattoo?

If you've ever experienced a cold sore — even if it was years ago — we recommend having a quick chat with your GP or pharmacist before your appointment. Lip procedures can sometimes trigger a flare-up in those who carry the virus, and a simple short course from your doctor beforehand can help avoid this and ensure the best possible result. Feel free to ask your technician about this when you book.

Do I need to hydrate my lips before a lip blush appointment?

Yes.

Can I drink alcohol before a lip blush appointment?

No. Avoid alcohol, aspirin, fish oil, and anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen for at least 48 hours before your appointment, as these can thin the blood and increase bleeding during the procedure. Limit caffeine on the day of your appointment.

What should I do with lip filler before a lip tattoo?

Please let us know in advance if you've had lip fillers in the last 6 weeks. We'll discuss timing and whether it's appropriate to proceed or reschedule.

What lip balm should I use before and after lip blush?

In the days before your appointment, use a plain, unflavoured, unmedicated lip balm to keep your lips hydrated. After your appointment, we recommend Healthy Care Paw Paw Balm or a plain, unflavoured, unmedicated balm. You're welcome to bring your preferred balm to the appointment for after.

Can I eat before a lip blush appointment?

Yes — eat a good meal before you come in. After your lip tattoo appointment you'll need to be careful with eating for the first few days while your lips heal, so it's important to arrive with a full stomach.
